What are sugar quills? This specialty treat from Honeyduke's sweet shop is described in the third Harry Potter book by J.K. Rowling, The Prisoner of Azkaban as "fragile spun quills...which you can suck in class and just look like you're thinking about what to write next". Kids will love these Hogwarts house themed quill suckers! Don't be intimated by making hard candy! They are not difficult!

A sugar quill for each Hogwarts House!

Why You'll Love This Recipe

  • You can make a color and flavor of sugar quill unique for each Hogwarts House!
  • These feathers have detail giving them a real quill look!
  • No wizarding world is complete without this unique candy!

Ingredient Notes

  • White Sugar - As this is a candy recipe you cannot substitute other things for the granulated white sugar.
  • Corn Syrup - Once again since this is a candy recipe you cannot substitute other things for the corn syrup.
  • LorAnn's Candy Flavoring - You can find this at most kitchen stores or stores like Hobby Lobby.
    • Cherry Flavoring with Red Food Color for Gryffindor
    • Lemonade Flavoring with Yellow Food Color for Hufflepuff
    • Raspberry with Blue Food Color for Ravenclaw
    • Green Apple with Green Food Color for Slytherin
  • Tart and Sour - You will also find this in the same stores as the candy flavoring. Despite the name it will not make these suckers sour. The suckers flavor is quite muted without it so I don't recommend skipping it.
  • Feather Molds - I purchases my feather molds from Amazon. The detail in these silicone molds is amazing and the while the "writing tip" can be a little tricky to fill the suckers peel out so easy! Purchase your feather molds HERE.

How to Make

  • First thing, lay out the feather molds across a cutting board, set aside.
  • Measure the candy flavoring, tart and sour enhancer into a small cup, set aside.
  • Cherry Flavoring with Red Food Color for Gryffindor

  • In a very small pot over medium high heat bring the sugar, water and corn syrup to a boil.
  • Attach a candy thermometer.
  • If you are using a non-stick pot you don't need to worry about stirring the sugar as it boils.
  • Boil until the temperature reaches 300 degrees aka hard crack stage.
  • Quickly remove the hot sugar syrup from the heat and quickly whisk in the flavoring and food coloring.
  • Carefully drizzle the hot syrup into the molds one at a time.  You will need to be quick and efficient.

  • Allow the sugar quills to cool before removing them from the molds.
  • Once cool carefully peel the mold off the sugar quill suckers starting at the quill bases.
  • Package with candy packaging or my favorite...in the bags you would use for candy coated pretzel rods.
